    • "There is still in existence a letter dated the 4th of July, 1637, written to the authorities of the Massachusetts Bay Company relating to the right of young John Thompson to ownershp of Thompson's Island. At that time he was about twelve years old. The letter was signed by Sir William Alexander, who was the Earl of Stirling, also Edward and Sir Ferdinando Gorges. These gentlemen wrote that Amias Thompson-Maverick was 'soe unnaturall to her own Child as to Consent to the dispossessing of him for what his father had so hardly obtained.' Furthermore, they thought Samuel Maverick had not done quite right by his stepson. The letter ended with a request that 'you will Continue your respective care of him till farther search can be made to find out the truth.'"
