    • In 1712, Humphrey Underhill reported that "Abraham Smith, the oldest of the children, is willing to live with his uncle, George Lane." This was recorded with the Court after the death of Abraham Smith's widow, Anna Bassett, in protecting the "orphans" of the estate. It was claimed that Arnold Bassett, her second husband, was "endeavoring to destroy ye estate of said Abraham Smith..."

    • Dutchess Co., Liber A. of Wills page 46. In his will, Abraham Smith "of Phillips Patent", Dutchess County mentions his wife Margaret, son Abraham, grandson Silvanus Covert, daughters Jemima Covert, Ann Headley, Bethiah Hill, Charity Ferrinton, and Mary Griffin.

    • According to the book "Hill, French, Dean, Austin, Pinckney, Barker, Rhoades, Loundsbury and Smith Families" By Franklin Couch (1907), "Abraham Smith was an Englishman, who settled on Long Island. About 1741 he removed to that part of Philipse Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY. What is now known as Putnam Valley, Putnam Co. He was married twice."

      According to the Smith family history, Abraham had two wives. The name of his first wife was not mentioned. In that history it stated that the only child that Abraham and Margaret had was Abraham, Jr. [4]
