    Notes
    • Nicholas and Dorothy arrived to New England on the "Mary & John". Nicholas Upsall lived in Dorchester, MA, but he later moved to Boston, where he operated the celebrated Red Lion Inn. He was a religious liberal and a trusted friend of Roger Williams of Rhode Island. In 1656, two Quaker girls landed in Boston and they were immediately jailed for their beliefs. The authorities wanted to starve them to death. When Nicholas was prevented from helping them, he bribed the jailer to take them some food. The girls were shipped to Barbados but Nicholas' continual support for them ended up with he being banished to the wilderness for a few years. He lived out his last years under a sort of house arrest, in the home of his brother-in-law, John Capen. !M&J 11:39
