1880 Census indicates that both James parents were born in Massachusetts. He is listed in the 1901 History & Directory of Ionia County as a lumber inspector at Hubbardston in Ionia Co. In 1875 he owned the large corner lot at Clinton and Pleasant streets in Hubbardston. (284 Pleasant St.)
