- Evidence for Mercy Wheelock, daughter of Samuel Wheelock and Sarah Kendricks, proposed as the wife of Joseph WIGHT.
Mercy Wheelock was born 27 Dec 1685.
Mercy ____ and Joseph WIGHT were married c. 1702 (first known child b. Medfield 6 November 1702, named Mercy). Mercy Wheelock would be age 17 years. Joseph was 23.
There is no marriage record for Joseph WIGHT to Mercy in any town records found. Joseph was born in Medfield, it would be very likely he would have married in Medfield to a woman of Medfield. There is no marriage record for Mercy WHEELOCK in any town.
Have found no death record of Mercy Wheelock even though most of her siblings died young and all their death's are recorded in Medfield.
There is no other child in Medfield born named Mercy that would have been even close to the age of the wife of Joseph WIGHT.
Joseph and Mercy named their second daughter, Rebecca. Mercy Wheelock's had sister Rebeka who died young.
Her grandmother was Rebecca Clarke. There are no persons named Rebecca in the WIGHT family.
WIGHT and WHEELOCK's did intermarry, (not a lot) Mercy's daughter, Martha Wight, m. Jonathan Wheelock, son of Benjamin.
Case against:
Note: Tilden, in the "History of Medfield, 1650-1886" reports that Mercy "died young". No record exists in Medfield, though, and this is the ONLY reference I've seen that makes this "died young" claim.
In Samuel Wheelock's will there is no mention of daughter Mercy, and his two living daughters Sarah and Mehitable are both mentioned.
