Shortly after Johannes Bouck, Sr. aquired his land in 1755 he built his home along the Schoharie River on Bouck Island in the town of Fulton. The original 1000 acres was divided between his sons, Johannes Jr., Christian and William. Johannes Jr., being the eldest, received the house and surrounding 350 acres after his father's death in 1799. He in turn sold the home and moved to Schoharie to become Assistant Judge of Schoharie County.
Christian built his own home about a half mile away, raising his family there. His son William C. Bouck who was born in his grandfather's home became the governor of New York in 1842.
William settled to the south of the family estate and remained there with his family until his death.
Between 1816-1830 the original homestead became the residence of President Martin Van Buren , who purchased it from Peter Hoes, his father-in-law. Peter Hoes had bought the home in 1816 from Johannes Lawyer who had purchased it from Johannes Jr in 1799. Over the past 250 years the home has been occupied by 16 families who have contributed to it's history and care. It stands today as magnificent as it was when my 6th great grandfather built it.
"William was an aged yet robust man during the Revolution and was taken prisoner by a party of Indians in July, 1780. After the fact became known at the upper fort, Capt. Hagar sent a squad in pursuit, and overtook the party in the present town of Jefferson the following day. The Indians, finding the patriots were in greater numbers than their own, fled precipitately, leaving their prisoners together with their booty in the hands of their pursuers. Those taken by Mr. Bouck were negro servants who had accompanied him from the Fort to the farm. The old gentleman was then a widower, his wife having died in 1770. Upon the hill near William Mitchell's residence stands an ancient tombstone, marking her resting place, and from it we learn that she was born in Amsterdam, but the date being so crumbled we are not able to decipher it."
